Does Your Content Speak Their Language? Does It *Read* Their Language?
Creating content for a global audience goes beyond simple translation. It's about respecting the fundamental ways in which different cultures read and interact with written material. One of the most significant differences is the direction of the text itself.
While most of the world reads from left-to-right (LTR), hundreds of millions of people read from right-to-left (RTL). At Fflipp, we believe your digital publications should feel natural to every reader, no matter their native language. That’s why we built the simple but powerful Reading Direction feature.
What are LTR and RTL?
This is a straightforward concept that has a huge impact on user experience.
- LTR (Left-to-Right): This is the standard for languages like English, Spanish, French, and most others. You start reading on the left side of the page and move your eyes to the right. Books open with the spine on the left, and you flip pages from right to left.
RTL (Right-to-Left): This is the standard for languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, and Persian (Farsi). It is also the traditional reading direction for Chinese and Japanese when written vertically. You start reading on the right and move your eyes to the left. Books open with the spine on the right, and you flip pages from left to right.
Simply presenting an Arabic or Hebrew document in a left-to-right flipping format feels unnatural and confusing to a native reader. It breaks the intuitive flow they've known their entire lives.
Who Should Use the RTL Feature?
This feature is a game-changer for a wide range of creators and businesses. You should use the RTL option if your flipbook is primarily in a right-to-left language. This is perfect for:
- Traditional East Asian Texts: Presenting Japanese manga, classic Chinese literature, or artistic calligraphy in its authentic vertical, right-to-left format. Fflipp's Creative Text Blocks can even be set to a vertical writing mode to match!
- Magazines & Publications: Publishing an online magazine for an audience in the Middle East or Israel.
- Educational Materials: Creating language-learning resources for Hebrew or Arabic.
- Business Brochures & Catalogs: Targeting customers in RTL-speaking regions with marketing materials that feel native and professional.
- Personal Photo Albums: Creating a beautiful family album with captions in an RTL language.
How to Set the Reading Direction in Fflipp
We made this incredibly easy. You don't need any special software or complex settings. You can set the direction when you first create your flipbook or change it anytime in the editor.
- Navigate to the Editor for your flipbook.
- In the main "Details" section, you'll find the "Reading Direction" dropdown menu.
- Simply select "Right-to-Left (RTL)" from the options.
- Click "Save Details".
That's it! When you view your flipbook, it will now open with the cover on the right, and the pages will flip from left to right, providing a natural and intuitive experience for your RTL readers.
Pro Tip: This feature is available to all Fflipp users, including those on our generous Free plan. We believe accessibility for a global audience is a fundamental feature, not a premium one.
